I'm torn. I consider the "tipping" expectation obnoxious and extortionist. But, individually refusing to tip does nothing to end the tradition in general. It only hurts the server. I tip 15%.
To end the practice would require a nationwide "tipping strike." It would have to be well organized and widely publicized so most everyone knew about it. Participants might wear a standardized badge so servers would be aware from the start that the customer was participating in the strike.
The strike would only be effective if there was massive participation.
