I understand the system that you refer to as a “dominance hierarchy” to be a result rather than a cause of individual behavior. It is a result of competition for scarce resources. The force that produces competition for sexual access is lust — sexual desire. Lust and sexual desire are inherent human characteristics, present in individuals, rather than characteristics of a system. Lust and sexual desire will manifest in any system.

In your world, people seek to dominate others because there is a dominance hierarchy. In my world, there is a dominance hierarchy because people seek to dominate others, because doing so confers practical benefits.

I believe that the men herein under discussion do not believe themselves to be desirable and bitterly wish they were. Rather than believing that they deserve something, they wish that they deserved it.

Within that framework I agree with your statement.
