Definitely in New York. I worked in that system for 33 years (now retired) as a teacher. New York prisons have a school system so that those without a high school diploma can earn a high school equivalency.

There was a good deal of gang activity and gang violence in our system. We locked down about once a year to search for weapons. The longest I remember was two weeks. The average was about one week. We teachers were recruited to prepare meals during lockdowns. The only time New York was entirely locked down was in 1971 during the Attica uprising; that was before my time.

I was in the minority among the staff in my conclusion regarding sex offenders, probably a minority of one. My reasoning was similar to yours. Many sex offenders claimed to be murderers.

You are fortunate to be in a facility without major gang issues. Keep your spirits up.
